Book: 1984 by George Orwell

Artist: Sophia Palmer

Artist’s Statement: This illustration represents the novel 1984 by George Orwell. Big Brother, as he is classically drawn, is in the background. The dominantly red and black color scheme is blunt, consistent, and intimidating, reflecting on the system of government in this book. One of the government’s slogans, “War is Peace”, is displayed, representing the mindset of much of the populace in the higher government. The red-shades book is meant to be the “forbidden” book in 1984 that lists the society’s political structure and overall deception. The paperweight, belonging to Winston (the books’ protagonist), represents romance and a sense of new found independence; however, the paperweight is cracked and dull, showing the futility of attempts made by Winston to escape this society.
