Artist’s Statement: This picture represents the novel A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. I illustrated the main character, Alex, giving a signature look to represent it. He is tipping down his hat, which is a gentlemanly gesture. This is a bit of mocking, since Alex is anything but gentlemanly, given his cruel, disturbing actions throughout the novel. In the clock being used as a “C” in “Clock-work”, the top number is 9, in reference to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, which is used in the novel and movie. In addition, in the background I in-cluded sections from the same symphony. The remainder of the background is orange, reminiscent of well-known, stylized illustrations that have been done of it before. The blood dripping from the word “Clockwork” reflects on the horrific “ultra-violence” in the book.
