Book: A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein

Artist’s Statment: This illustration was inspired by the book A Light in the Attic by Shel Silver-stein. I chose a simple black and white design to emulate the illustrations found in the book. I used rough, sketch-like shading for the same reason. The lamp on the boy’s head is similar in concept to the attic on the head on the man on the book’s cover. The switch is coming from his ear to show the whimsical and sometimes surreal nature of the writing found in this collec-tion of poetry. The apple on the lamp was included in reference to another book by Silverstein, The Giving Tree.
