Artist’s Statement: This illustration represents the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. My concept uses the pig’s head described in the book. I chose this as the focus because I felt like it accurately portrayed the morbidity and “decomposition” of morals in the novel. The broken glasses are meant to be those of Piggy, a little boy that was murdered by the others on the island. This was an intense and poignant part of the novel, so it seemed appropriate to include. The bleeding eyes and neck show corruption. The pig’s single closed eye represents “turning a blind eye” to the savage nature of humans left to fend for themselves.
