Artist’s Statement: John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men has been challenged for a variety of reasons. These include profanity, use of racial slurs, insensitivity to the mentally handicapped, and promoting euthanasia. The book is required reading for many high schools students and has made an indelible impact on our popular culture.
I chose to illustrate the scene where George discovers that Lenny has been carrying around a dead mouse, and George demands that he hand it over. This is a pivotal scene that sets the tone for the book. I worked in ink to achieve an aesthetic that echoes the barebones existence of the novel’s two main protagonists.
