Book: A Separate Peace by John Knowles

Artist: Mariah Houk

Artist’s Statement: This work is inspired by A Separate Peace by John Knowles. The image is a literal representation of a scene in the book, the scene of the two main char-acters in the tree. I’ve always appreciated how the tree in the book is re-membered by Gene as a giant, looming, scary thing. But then years later when he goes back and visits it again, he finds that it’s actually much smaller than it had grown in his memory, and he is surprised to see it looking very non-threatening. I think this book is still relevant today in that it shows the ways that war affects people that aren’t even fighting in it.

The materials used in this work are paper, wax, ink, watercolor paint, and acrylic paint. The process included wax resist, collage, drawing, and paint-ing.
