Artist’s Statement: This book is often misclassified as a children’s book because of the main character, Buck, is a dog. The Call of the Wild visits many mature concepts and has vivid scenes of violence and cruelty that may not be suitable for children.

Thanks for honoring this book with a banned book card — I love the painting. I started reading this to my son when he was in third grade and also thought — eek — its violent. But the reason I wanted to read it to him was that my third grade teacher read it to my class, and it was my all-time favorite school read-aloud experience as a child. I identified with the dog’s struggle, and I found the book as a whole to be a great and magical escape. The class would beg our teacher — please read another chapter — and she would — and we were on the edge of our seats. So thanks for sparking this fond memory. I love the banned book trading cards and am amazed by what has been banned over the years.
This painting is amazing! I’m not surprised that its in the top 7.
