Five Reasons I Love Working in the LPL Children’s Area

Following my first month as a Children’s Desk Assistant at LPL, I thought I’d share some of the highlights of my new job. Here are a few of my favorite things…

Searching for a favorite book and finding it!

What a joy it is to be the gateway to so much information and entertainment. Everyday  children come to me hoping to find books on their favorite subjects or by their favorite authors. When we find that certain book it is often a moment of true celebration. “Yes! They have it!” Don’t hesitate to ask for help, it is one of my favorite things to do.

Helping parents find books that fit their child’s reading level.

What’s the difference between an Easy Reader and an Early Chapter book?

It is not always easy to find the right book for your child’s reading level.  As a former children’s literacy instructor, I have worked with readers of all ages and abilities and enjoy recommending age appropriate books. If you have a question about what types of books will suit your reader’s level, I am happy to help.

Offering high-quality children’s programs, FOR FREE!

Summer can be long, especially if you are caring for little ones! The Lawrence Public Library offers kids activities all-summer long, all totally free.

Eight weekly story-times, book clubs, world-class children’s performers, Kidsapalooza, and Exploratorium are just a few of the offerings this summer. I love being part of an organization that values community and opens its doors to everyone regardless of their ability to pay.

Come join us for a story time or one of our awesome programs!

The Fish Tank!

Ah, the original IPad. There is something about the children’s room fish tank that is captivating, calming, and meditative for kids of all ages. Why does only one fish have a name? I have no idea!  I do know that kids love watching the tank and look forward to seeing the fish each time they visit.

 Story time

My favorite part of being part of the Children’s area team is leading story time. My own children attended Miss Linda and Miss Jane’s story times from infancy and will remember their experiences for all their lives. To be a part of such a rich tradition is an honor.

My own story times feature interactive music, dramatic play, and, of course, stories! Join me this summer at the library, Sundays at 3:30, for books, songs, and, maybe, a dance party.
