The Scarlet Letter

Artist: Ashley Hocking

Banned/Challenged Book: The Scarlet Letter

Reason for Banning: Deemed “pornographic and obscene” by a parent group in 1977. Story is controversial because protagonist, Hester Prynne, has an adulterous affair and a resulting pregnancy.

Excerpt from Artist’s Statement: The girl in the image dons an embroidered scarlet “A” on her chest like Hester Prynne. The wooden cabin in the foreground represents the home Hester and her daughter Pearl lived in, secluded from the rest of the town. The font of the title symbolizes Hester’s talent as a seamstress.
