We All Fall Down

Artist: Courtney Cooper

Banned/Challenged Book: We All Fall Down

Reason for Banning: Banned from libraries because it was named one of the most challenged books by the American Library Association from 1990 to 2000 for its frank language and adult themes.

Excerpt from Artist’s Statement: The girl on the card represents Jane, how she decides to view her life and her sister from a different angle after her sister’s accident. The burnt paper boat represents how Jane goes to Buddy for comfort, but she only sees part of him. She does not see the other side of Buddy, the side that witnessed her sister’s assault and was involved in the trashing of her home.
