Fahrenheit 451

Artist: Dale Martin

Banned/Challenged Book: Fahrenheit 451

Reason for Banning: Contains offensive language and content

Excerpt from Artist’s Statement: This piece presents an alternative view of the events in Fahrenheit 451, in which one of the novel’s firemen — or really, any book banner — dares to approach a book with a less rigid view of the “threat” they represent. Amazingly, Fahrenheit 451, perhaps the most famous anti-censorship novel of the 20th century, was itself bowdlerized by Bradbury’s own publisher! “Some cubby-hole editors at Ballantine…had, bit by bit, censored some 75 separate sections from the novel,” wrote Bradbury in the restored 1979 edition, which had “all the damns and hells back in place.”
