The Color Purple

Artist: Kelly Cavner

Banned/Challenged Book: The Color Purple

Reason for Banning: Homosexuality, offensive language, and sexual explicitness

Excerpt from Artist’s Statement: The color “purple” in the book, besides ultimately representing God’s love for us, also represents the painful bruises of violence. Violence and sexual abuse can’t be ignored. This book should have never been challenged or banned because, while God wants us to know that He is with us through the most horrible of times, He also doesn’t want us to ignore injustices in the world that have to be faced.
