Kelly Cavner #2

To Kill a Mockingbird

Artist: Kelly Cavner

Banned/Challenged Book: To Kill A Mockingbird

Reason for Banning: Racial slurs, profanity, and blunt dialogue about rape

Excerpt from Artist’s Statement: This is a wonderful book with so many important messages. It’s a travesty that it could have ever been banned or challenged. My design is illustrated from a child’s perspective, Jem and Scout’s point of view — what they’re learning about racial hatred. Just as “killing a mockingbird is a sin,” so is the way Tom Robinson, an innocent black man, is judged, persecuted, and ultimately killed by the white community.
