Artist: Liza MacKinnon
Banned/Challenged Book: Frankenstein
Reason for Banning: Banned in South Africa in 1955 for being “indecent, objectionable and obscene.”
Excerpt from Artist’s Statement: In this hand illustrated rendering, I chose to concentrate on the tragedy of the individual. Created to be the epitome of the perfect man, he remained isolated and reviled, forced outside of society without comprehension. I dressed him as a well appointed gentleman, choosing to minimize the scars and emphasize his societal correctness.
