Artist: Louis Copt
Banned/Challenged Book: All Quiet on the Western Front
Reason for Banning: Publicly burned in Germany in 1933 for being “degenerate”.
Excerpt from Artist’s Statement: Growing up surrounded by veterans of WW II, war stories were never far from the conversation. Movie theaters and television were filled with films that glorified and romanticized conflict. I will never forget the sorrow of my Grandmother Copt who lost a son on a submarine in the South Pacific. She became a fervent pacifist, and I knew that my destiny was not to become a soldier. Those who are determined to settle differences with war and violence can gain much by reading this book.
