We’ve Made It to the Final Four!

Ahoy, waffle fans! We’ve advanced to the Final Four round in a national championship for best public library. On Monday, we go head-to-head with Pueblo, CO. 6,000 votes could take us to the National Championship.

Just being nominated is incredible. Making it to the Top 8 has us so excited that we’re worried that you’ll start utilizing Facebook’s new ‘snooze for 30 days’ option.

This round of voting ends on FEB 16 at midnight Eastern Time. You can vote for Lawrence Public Library once per round.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The library with the most public votes by the final round will receive the Leslie B. Knope Award, named for a fictional character played by Amy Poehler on the television show Parks and Recreation.

The Engaging Local Government Leaders (ELGL) organization is hosting the Best Public Library in America contest and we’re ready to stick it to the award’s namesake for her unfortunate perception of libraries.

Leslie Barbara Knope is on record as saying that, “libraries are the worst group of people ever assembled in history. They’re mean, conniving, rude, and extremely well-read, which makes them very dangerous.”

Winning this award will light an even greater fire beneath us to continue our mission of being a kind, accessible, and safe community hub that thrives through learning, innovation, and opportunity.

The contest began with 116 libraries nominated and Lawrence Public Library is now down to 16 in a March Madness-style bracketing system. We beat Provo Library, UT, receiving 71 percent of the votes last week to reach this stage.

If we receive more votes than the Lied Public Library in Scottsbluff, NE, we’ll move to the final eight, which runs from Feb. 12-16.

Lawrence is home to The University of Kansas, which has won three NCAA basketball tournament championships. We’d like to add National Public Library Champions that to the mix. Imagine Mass Street packed with people in support of their hometown library!

The contest will continue through to the Final Four with the National Championship round taking place from FEB 26 — MAR 2.

We encourage everyone to vote.
The contest is judged solely by votes.

The winning library earns a trophy and bragging rights, but we’re just happy about the community support it’s already received.

To reach the top 32 just shows us how much Lawrence loves its library. We’re so lucky to serve such an incredibly smart, hilarious, kind, and supportive community. We’re basically in love with our town!
