Book Club in a Bag
Do you and your fellow book clubbers scramble each month to find enough copies of the selected book? Is it your turn to lead the discussion and you don't know where to
start? Lawrence Public Library has made things a whole lot easier with our newest service just for book clubs!
What is a Book Club in a Bag?
Each bag contains ten copies of the selected title and a discussion guide compiled by LPL staff. The guide includes everything you need to get your next meeting started
(discussion questions, author biographies, critical reviews, lists for further reading, and more). The guide also contains ideas for creating and managing a book group as
well as other library resources for book clubs.
The bags circulate for 8 weeks and cannot be renewed. The bags check out to one person and circulate as a unit, so the person checking out the bag is responsible for it
coming back in with all copies intact. To help with this, we include a sign-out sheet to help keep track of the books. You can reserve a bag up to a year in advance.
How do I check a bag out?
- To reserve a bag, please fill out this form. Library staff will respond within 48 hours.
- When you're notified that your bag is ready, you'll pick it up and check it out from the Reference Desk.
What books are available?
We have a mix of fiction and nonfiction, classic and newer titles, and we continually add more. Click here
to see the current list of available titles.
What else should I know?
We've compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions that will help you get started using the service. Of
course, if you have further questions, please contact William Ottens via email at wottens@lawrencepubliclibrary.org or call
him at 843-1178.
Do you accept donations?
- We happily accept donations of books that your book group has read. If you don't have ten copies, we'll gladly take as many as you have as a start for a new bag and
add the rest.
- If you'd like to donate funds directly to this program, we have an "Adopt a Bag" option. A contribution of $100 covers the cost of ten copies of a selected
book and the tote bag.
Are there other library resources for book clubs?
- The Lawrence Public Library's Book Blog contains lots of information for book lovers, including a list
of Book Group Resources.
- The library also has space available for book groups to hold their meetings. Contact the reference department by telephone at 785-843-1178 or by email at
eref@lawrencepubliclibrary.org for more information about reserving our gallery space.
The Book Club in a Bag service is made possible
through the generous support of
the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library
and the Lawrence Public Library Foundation.
