About the Friends
The Friends of the Lawrence Public Library is a group of individuals who believe in the importance of a strong community library. The Friends advocate for the Lawrence Public Library by improving communication with elected officials and the community as a whole. They raise funds in support of the Lawrence Public Library through the sale and redistribution of books. The Friends book sales, behind the library at 7th and Kentucky Streets, are legendary in our community!

They also aid in the purpose of the Lawrence Public Library by supporting its operations and collections. As the only membership organization at the Lawrence Public Library, the Friends work to increase membership and recognize volunteers. The Friends have a goal of promoting literacy and the love of reading.

Join the Friends!
By joining the Friends, you can see the difference we make firsthand. Volunteers work year-round preparing for the sales and during the sales. Members make the difference!

Friends Support the Library
The Friends use proceeds from their book sales and memberships to fund library projects, programs and materials. We also participate in volunteer opportunities and advocate for the Lawrence Public Library. In 2010, the Friends donated $63,500 to the library in support of many special projects, including summer reading materials, staff continuing education and educational scholarships, sponsorship of the monthly BookPage subscription, and the maintenance of the aquarium in the children's room. In addition, the Friends gave in-kind donations valued at over $10,000. These donations were mostly books and DVDs in excellent condition, donated to the circulating collection from donations the Friends received from the community. Library staff selects these materials.

Donate Books and Other Items for the Sales
The Friends receives, processes and sells about 100,000 items per year! They accept books of all kinds on any subject, music CDs, movie DVDs, movie VHS tapes, cassette tapes and records. They do not accept magazines, Readers' Digest Condensed Books, encyclopedicas, and items that are dirty, moldy, wet, or damaged. If you have any questions, please e-mail the Friends at: flpl@lawrence.lib.ks.us

The Friends of the Library is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. If you want a receipt for your donation, ask at the reference and information desk.

The Friends donation bins are located in the Adult Services area next to the online catalog computers. Ask a staff member at the reference and information desk for a receipt.

You may also drive up and deliver items on the west side of the building in the staff parking lot. Donations are received Monday through Friday between the hours of 9am and 4pm. Please ring the doorbell and a staff person will assist you.
