Upcoming Read Across Lawrence Events
Lawrence Book Night
Friday, August 31st, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM @ The Percolator
What happens when you give away hundreds of books in one town on a single night? We’ll find out when librarians from Lawrence Public Library and KU Libraries make the circuit of local shops, galleries, restaurant and bars to give away copies of the 2012 Read Across Lawrence books.
Lawrence Book Night culminates at the Percolator for huge kickoff celebration! We’ll give away 100 more copies of Winter’s Bone on the Percolator patio, plus an interactive art installation and an evening of Ozark music by the Americana Music Academy and the Hairy Vetch String Band, which hails from Neosho, Missouri and is featured on the Winter’s Bone film soundtrack.
Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town
Thursday, September 20th, 7:30 PM – 9:00 PM @ The Dole Institute of Politics
Join us for an evening in conversation with Nick Reding, journalist and author of the New York Times bestseller Methland. Nick Reding spent four years in the small rural town of Oelwein, Iowa, with a mission to chronicle meth abuse in this real-life Winter’s Bone story. Once a railroad, meat-packing and farming hub, Oelwein has been battered by the Farm Crisis and decimated by job losses. More recently, record amounts of methamphetamine are available on Oelwein’s streets — just like thousands of other small towns across the United States.
