“GENEALOGY 101: HOW TO BEGIN”
A Genealogy for Beginners workshop will be held 7-8:30pm on Wednesday, November 11th in the Library Auditorium. Presented by the Douglas County Genealogy Society and the Adult & Senior Services of the Library, basic techniques to research your family history will demonstrated. Print and on-line resources will be shown. Designed for beginners and as a refresher for those returning to the search, this class will be helpful to anyone interested in genealogy. SKILLBUILDERS concludes the Fall sessions this month. A variety of topics will be discussed, finishing with a Celebration and Remembrance program. Discussions are held each Thursday morning from 10-11:45am in the Gallery room of the Library. No registration is needed. Refreshments are served.

| Skillbuilders is a series of programs educational and supportive programs designed for widows, widowers and caregivers but all interested persons are invited to attend. Sponsored by the Senior Outreach Services of the Lawrence Public Library, the Dg.Co.VNA, Rehabitilation and Hospice and the Dg.Co.Senior Services with the support of the United Way. Bookvan
|
For your convenience, a bookvan visits select retirement communities throughout Lawrence. The bookmobile has a small collection of material from the main library, including books, DVDs and
audio-books. Requests may be made for other titles. Materials borrowed from the main library may be returned at the bookmobile, also. A library card is needed to borrow materials but if
you do not have a card, one can be obtained with the proper identification. All are welcome to check out material from the bookvan; you do not have to be
a resident of the retirement community. |

Though the bookvan stops are at retirement communities, you need not be a resident to borrow items. The public is invited to use the bookvan at any location.

Home Delivery
| For patrons with physical disabilities, or age or transportation limitations, which prevent visits to the library, free door-to-door delivery can be arranged. Deliveries are made within the city limits of Lawrence twice a month by Kiwanis volunteers. Contact the Senior Outreach Coordinator, Pattie Johnston, at 843-3833 extension 115 to arrange for this service. |

Once a month, a sampling of new, old, and special material is discussed at various locations. No prior reading is required. Material is available from the main library or the bookvan. Old
familiar authors, new titles, movies, music, audio-books . . . each month is a different mix. Share what you are reading or listening to or watching with the others. That's part of the fun! You need not be a resident of the site to attend. The public is invited! |

Programs
Programs with topics of special interest to older patrons are presented in the library and at local retirement centers. Presenters from local agencies speak on senior concerns such as
health or finances, and interests including hobbies, history, travel, and education. Programs with a focus on senior issues and interests are typically scheduled on weekday afternoons
and Sundays. Check the library events calendar for topics and times of the programs.
Large Print Collection
The library has an extensive collection of material with 14+ point lettering for ease of reading. Nonfiction and fiction, including mysteries, romance and westerns are in this area.

Talking Books
Talking Books is a service of the Library of Congress. Through this service, books that have been recorded are available to anyone who is unable to use standard printed materials because of
a physical disability. This service is free, but must be applied for by the person needing the service. A medical statement must be provided. A machine is loaned for as long as needed. A
monthly selection of titles is sent to the recipient. Requested recordings are sent directly to the client. Shipping is guaranteed to and from the client. The selection of titles offered
includes recently published titles, as well as older books. Recordings may be kept as long as needed. The Topeka and Shawnee County Library is the regional office serving the Lawrence area,
however, the Lawrence Public Library has information and applications for the service. Please inquire at the Reference and Information Desk or bookvan for information on how to apply for
the service.
Audio Reader
Locally, the University of Kansas provides Audio-Reader services to persons with physical or vision difficulties. Over the special radio receiver, books, magazines and daily newspapers are read. A variety of materials selected to be recorded, with a large-print program guide provided listing times for the reading of each title. This service can be heard over a wide area in northeast Kansas. Applications for Audio Reader service may be requested at Reference and Information Desks or the bookvan.
