Let’s be honest, 2016 has been kind of a hot mess. Between so many celebrity deaths (David Bowie, Sharon Jones, Prince, Alan Rickman, Muhammad Ali, Elie Wiesel… holy cow, SO MANY) and some, uh, general upheaval, most people are ready to write this one off as a loss.
But! As much as we’d like to say goodbye and good riddance to the year as a whole, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention one of the very good things that came from 2016; this year has offered readers a wealth of fabulous new books. Debut authors and big-hitters alike have released incredible works in 2016, and the staff of LPL would like to share a few of our favorites. If you’re looking for great gifts for bibliophiles in your life, try one of these librarian-approved reads: Read More..

He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how. – Friedrich Nietzsche
Two days after the election, I was in New York for business, and I found myself roaming the streets of Brooklyn. Everywhere I went, people seemed to be trying to make sense of the incredible divide in our country. Some people claimed to be shocked. Others claimed to be unsurprised, but there was a palpable sense of people searching for threads of understanding they could weave into substance while absorbing the outcome of a long and contentious campaign. If you can’t get to Brazil for the 2016 Summer Games, you can participate in Library Games this Saturday for free!
We’ll be flexing our muscles and brains with all sorts of fun activities, like martial arts demos, golf putting tips, and cookie decorating (and eating)—even something called “smells of Lawrence past” (you heard that right!) The Book Squad will be out in force connecting you with new reads, and the dogs from Tail Wagging Readers will be here, too. There’s even going to be a solar telescope!
Eileen’s Colossal Cookies and Dillion’s will bring the treats, and the ever-popular Spinner returns for another round of “make Brad do whatever the arrow lands on.”
Come get your Summer party on with the Library! Fun for all ages is guaranteed.

TUE | Apr 12 | 5 PM | Library Lawn
National Library Week is April 10-16 and we’re rallying library supporters for a walk to City Hall to say “thank you” for our wonderful library!
As if it couldn’t get any better, Michael and Morris the Monkey from our ridiculously popular Toddler Storytime will play music for our stroll! So, wear your library t-shirt, make a sign telling the City why you love your library, and we’ll provide the flags (red with white dots, of course!) Once we arrive at City Hall, there will be a brief, 5-minute presentation of the library’s annual report and a proclamation from our Mayor.
Help rally support with our Facebook event!
Join us and bring friends!
