Storytime

Let There Be Light!

Join us for Rabbi Zalman Teichtel’s annual holiday storytime.

On Friday, DEC 15 from 10:30–11:45 AM, we’ll hear the story of Hanukkah, press olives for oil, make wicks, and then light the holiday Menorah!

Check out these pictures from last year! All ages are welcome and we’ll meet in the Readers’ Theater.

Deja’s Reading Rainbow

We’ve got a superstar guest joining us for an all-ages storytime this month! Miss Deja Brooks will be here Sunday, December 10th at 3:30 PM in the Auditorium with stories celebrating our local LGBTQIA+ community, families of all kinds, fun, and of course—RAINBOWS!

Following the lead of Harvey Milk Memorial Library and Brooklyn Public Library, we’re hoping our own version of drag queen storytime is as sparkly and glamorous as it is a safe space for, “positive, and unabashedly queer role models…where kids can imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress up is real.” (SOURCE: Drag Queen Story Hour)

Pajamas and Lovies and Reading—Oh My!

We’re celebrating the importance of reading in the lives of young Kansans throughout the month of November with lots of fun at the library.

Sunday–Saturday, NOV 12–18, join us for storytime readings of The Napping House by Audrey Wood (the librarians will be wearing their snuggliest jammies—you should, too!) and enjoy the fresh air on our Downtown Storywalk©. We’re even hosting a stuffed animal sleepover right here at the library!

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week is an annual event that promotes reading to children under the age of five. Parents, teachers, and caregivers are encouraged to read The Napping House throughout November.

2017’s Best New Picture Books

Thank you, Dan Coleman, for writing a beautiful, nostalgic piece about the Vinland Fair, so I can go hog wild suggesting all of the newest picture books! Hooray for me! And you, fortuitous reader! I’m lucky enough to do storytime here at LPL, and while there are some challenging days of herding toddlers, it is a joy and a privilege to introduce children to literature and catch a small slice of their innocence and wonder.

When we started up storytime again this fall, I wanted to try something different: read a handful of random books, held together only by the fact that they were published in 2017. (Weirdly most of them are from February, who knew that was such a hot picture book publishing month?)

Here are a few of my favorites. My only disclaimer is that I chose these for a Toddler Storytime audience; I think ALL of these would work well for older and younger kids, I mean, they utterly delight me, but keep in mind they were picked to work for toddlers especially. Read More..
